I am a behavioural biologist and my research is driven by a fundamental question: how and why do animals communicate?

To answer this question, I investigate communicative and behavioural systems from comparative, ontogenetic, and adaptive perspectives. I combine a strong field-based approach (observational and experimental) with quantitative analyses. Specifically, I have investigated the development, production, usage and flexibility of vocalisations, and auditory learning abilities within primates.

In my postdoctoral research at the HEB, I investigate how between-group movement in bonobos is coordinated by long-distance vocalisations.
